Reggae and Dancehall will be among the main attraction tonight (Oct. 27) at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards with no fewer than five Jamaican top-flight recording artistes set to take the main stage.
Jamaican entertainers Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Koffee, Shenseea, Skip Marley, and ZJ Liquid are set to be featured on the staple awards show which is in its fifteenth year.
BET Network announced the Jamaican lineup, as well as paid homage to the Reggae/Dancehall culture on its social media pages with the following caption: "Yuh no seh Jamaica ah run tings! Thanks to Dancehall/Soundclash culture Hip Hop gained its competitive roots! #HipHopAwards."
BET and the entertainers participated in a series of promotional activities via social media, heightening anticipation for their expected performances which will take the form of a cypher -- a popular feature on the awards show.
It is widely believed that the buzz created by Beenie Man and Bounty Killa Verzuz battle earlier this year flung the door wide open for this proliferation of Dancehall and Reggae acts on this year's awards show.
However, this isn't the first time that a BET awards show has showcased the Dancehall culture. Back in 2013, a well-executed set which featured Jabba, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Beenie Man, and Elephant Man set the arena on fire with stellar performances. The BET awards show belong to Reggae and Dancehall that year.
This year's BET Hip Hop Awards show will take the form of the new norm - virtual - as the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in the U.S. and across the world.
